Student Named 2012 John G. Winant Fellow

David MeehanDavid Meehan, a sophomore in the computer information systems program, was named a 2012 John G. Winant Fellow by UNH’s Carsey Institute in May 2012. The fellowship is in support of his summer internship with the YWCA New Hampshire. The internship project will complete the implementation of a web application with a database backend to provide donation management services to YWCA staff.

The Carsey Institute received 35 applicants for this extremely competitive fellowship. Meehan was one of three students who received the award.

The Winant fellowship program was established at the University of New Hampshire in 1982 in memory of the late New Hampshire governor John G. Winant to encourage the professional development of undergraduates with a strong commitment to public service.

The fellowship pays a stipend for a summer internship with a New Hampshire nonprofit organization or government agency, recognizing exceptional students with an interest in the nonprofit and public sectors and providing valuable work experience in the field of public service.

Student Summer Research in Computing

UNH Manchester students Daniel Pepin of Manchester, NH, and Rebecca Lee of Merrimack, NH have been awarded Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships by the University of New Hampshire.

Pepin, a student in the computer information systems program, received a $3,500 fellowship for his research on OpenITware Platform Architecture to Support Learning and Outreach in the CIS Program at UNH Manchester. Lee, a student in the communication arts program with a minor in computer information systems, received a $1,000 award for her research on Enabling Technology Transfer from the Computer Information Systems Classroom to the Manchester Community.

UNH’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) supports students with their research and creative projects by funding Undergraduate Research Awards (URAs) and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs). Whether through taking a research-intensive course, working in one of the University’s many centers or institutes, or teaming up with a favorite professor to pursue a mutual academic interest, the opportunities to become involved in research are abound for students of all majors.
